Notorious
Hi guys For those of us that dont have the luxury of a proper filtered barracks system, what is the next best thing? I was thinking about using a dormant 3' tank, cutting tops off several 2lt coke bottles, with small holes in the side of all bottles. I would have about 6-8 half bottles in the tank with a male in each.....the tank would then have 1 heater and an internal filter to get the water moving.....im hoping the holes would circulate the water and thus filter the water and keep them warm would this work any other cheap DIY thoughts? Bettarazzi
I think Brett used to jar his fry like that. But he also did very regular water changes.
Chuckie
yeah, that doesn't sound like an unusual setup. should do the trick. Make sure you have proper water flow though, dead patches are obviously bad.
Callatya
I did a similar thing but in glass bottles. It was mainly for heating but it also contained disease outbreaks, which I found handy.
Chuckie
but Notorious you're planning to have them in shared water, right?
Notorious
Yes, shared water is that bad?
Anasfire
Only if one gets a disease, means all get exposed to it also. Definitely something to be said for enclosed barracks in my opinion. I refuse to use a shared water source barracks.
Chuckie
if you're just jarring a bunch of juvies from the same spawn, they would have been in shared water anyway :)
Bettarazzi
It's a balance. I have much less disease and deaths in my shared water barracks. I'm sure that's because there's much more water per fish and lots of filtration. Much more stable water conditions mean fewer water changes and fewer disease. I have run both filtered shared water barracks and unfiltered self-contained jars at the same time and the barracks wins hands down. Much fewer deaths and fewer back breaking water changes.
