tgo576231
Hey all Just a quick q.... Can you put goldfish in with female bettas?
fuzzy_dragonfly
No, water needs are different and goldfish will probably have a nip at the bettas (depending on how big they are). I've seen it done but I wouldn't reccomend bettas and goldfish, they aren't really compatible.
Phil
Bettas require warm water, goldfish require cold water so its not idea. I once had some bettas in with my goldfish when i was first starting out and the goldfish ate them!
Bren MacFish
It's like putting dogs in a cow pen. Goldies a big pushy vegetarians who poop a lot and need aerated water. Bettas are small nippy meat eaters who like warmth.
fuzzy_dragonfly
Omnivorous cows . Our goldies eat anything that fits in their mouth.
Callatya
In theory you could keep a baby fancy goldfish with peaceful tropical fish, but it wouldn't last. The goldfish would grow much faster than the rest and they are quite boofy and thuggish fish. Also, the super-fancy types like celestials and bubble-eyes would probably be able to be rather seriously damaged should the female get a bit of fire in her. I'd advise against it. If you need to do it short-term, divide the tank and beef up the filtration :flex:
Fishchick
I've had no problems with VT males and females in with 5-7cm fantail goldfish. (heated room) In fact I often use the goldfish tanks to house a chewer until the betta's tail grows back.
VickiPS
I've only had limited experience keeping goldfish, but had 2 medium-sized goldies sharing a tank with 4 black-banded rainbowfish for 18 months. It was the healthiest tank I had Although goldfish are a cold water species, in reality here in Qld they are accustomed to water temps in a similar range to tropicals. I keep mine at 23-24 deg C, and the tank is well filtered (because they do poo a lot!) The goldies pretty much ignored the rainbowfish.
fuzzy_dragonfly
Actually I find that Matthew's goldfish get really lethargic in warm water, approx 22>. We use a small ice bottle to keep the water cool on warm days.
