UV Filters

UV filters are basically a tube fitted with a UV light on the inside. Usually they are inline filters, and you just sort of slot them in the output tube of your canister. As the water comes through, it gets hit by the UV light. This light indiscriminately kills any organisms in the water. Depending on the speed of your pump, the width of the tube, and the amount of organisms/spores/etc in your water, it can take several passes through the filter to get it down to a level where you could no longer have problem, as the light can only kill what it is directly in contact with.

It shouldn't effect your biofilter as the bugs that maintain that live on surfaces for the most part, and not free in the water.

They are effective at preventing and controlling disease as they help stop the spread of it through the water, however once it has a host you may not see any great benefit as the problem is then with isolating and treating that individual. It would still be of benefit to curb the spread to other fish, especially if we are talking a barracks where affected cells can be physically isolated, and not a single tank.

Some of the affected water has spread through the system. So to clear up any illness and prevent further problems I'm treating all the fish that have had their taps turned on in the past week or two as though they are infected/possibly sick. Not to meantion that some bays can't be isolated since they leak.

Robert (hubby) got a UV sterilizer and meds so that as much as possible we can limited/kill off the illness before any others get sick or present as sick.
