Bettarazzi
It would be extremely annoying if you were trying to develop this strain and then got a spawn with no ventrals :) Edited May 21, 2007 by Bettarazzi
Ned
HAHAHAHAHA, do you think he is a freak of nature then used to develop the strain or the breeder was mean to do that?
Bettarazzi
Really don't know. It would be interesting to research how ventrals seem to differ from the unpaired fins. You commonly see ventrals which are a different colour to the unpaired fins eg blue fish with red ventrals. So I guess there are separate genes which govern the appearance of ventrals (and pectorals for that matter) otherwise we would be able to expect the ventrals and pectorals to look similar to the other fins. Celeste84
just had to add that missing ventrals is caused by bacteria and not the genetics so if you bred him you could expect ventrals on the fry unless they were belly sliders, where by the bacteria would have a chance to render them ventral-less :)
Bettarazzi
Yeah but if you were specifically breeding them for their ventrals and a bacteria got to them, you'd be pretty annoyed. Do the ventrals grow back once the bacterial problem is eliminated?
Callatya
Generally not, occasionally they'll come through late, but usually once they are missing, they are missing for good.
Celeste84
*nods* i've never had the ventrals grow back, and it's not only the bacteria! i have one girl who had one vental ripped off by a sibling in the grow out tank, her ventral never grew back either
