Bn have laid eggs?

Lyarlla

Recommended Posts

Mine haven't hatched yet, but it appears they are starting to. I can see the clearish white egg sack more clearly around them now, which to me is a sure sign that they're moving around in there trying to get clear of it.

I'll probably have little yellow dots with tails by tonight/tomorrow morning at the latest. I'm getting better at realising when they're about to hatch :)

Hows the babies going Lyarlla and Cassi?

I've just found 2 tiny longfin albinos sticking to the front of the tank - the others won't be too far behind in the great escape from the log and into the world. The calico's are about a day behind so by tomorrow I'm hoping to see some of them escape too (fingers crossed).

Mine started hatching yesterday, as I expected they would. All are hatched now, large bunch of yellow dots with wagging tails for the daddy to watch over. If he weren't in the way so often I'd take a photo! lol. Well that and I need to wait until my son gets home from school, so he can shine the torch down the cave whilst I snap away.

Just outta interest, what size tank do you have yours in?

Yeah dad the big fatty keeps blocking any views I might get but they are getting darker in colour. There looks to be about 15 of them? He isnt letting them out yet and every time I manage to line the lamp and camera up, fat head gets in the way (the other day it was a mystery snail parked in front of the log on the zuccini). Mum is regularly around the log and looks happier than she has in a while.

The light on the tank has broken so I'm going to have to buy a new one.

Cassi - my pairs are in 15" cubes a the moment - will move babies out to other tanks when they get big enough to fend for themselves.

Lyarlla - watch out - mum might be ready to lay more eggs! my calico's had their first and second spawns back to back.

I HAVE A PHOTO!!! yay.. Kind of hijacked your thread Lyarlla but it's along the same lines! We both have bn babies yay

You can't really see their tails because his head is in the way, he's an awesome daddy! But every time I look up there, there's little wagging tails :) so cute!

LOL.... poor bn getting ribbed because of his fat head! He's just protecting his kids from the peepers out there!!!!

I just took a vid of the calico babies (last batch) if you want to have a look - 3 of them fighting like hell (must be boys) while a pair of girls get on with eating some zuchinni.... also a couple of other vids and one of the longfins as well... all taken by my phone camera so a bit blurry / not too good quality but ....

Calico's fighting

Lyarlla,

some use a fork and other implements but I find its easy to put a rubber band round a rock and sink the zuchinni that way - the fish dont seem to much the rubber at all and as long as you remove it the rubber won't decay in the tank. Maybe a skewer would work better but haven't tried it before (don't want anything sharp in there the way those calico boys play round)

The fry usually spend a week in the log using up their yolk sack and then gradually make their way past dad. The males are pretty good at keeping things (even food) out of the log! Thought you'd get one past him did you!?!?!

I think I've counted up to 17 of the longfins so far - none left in the log so hoping my count is accurate. The calico's are all still inside their log.

How's your kids going?

I keep seeing the fry sneak towards the entrance then dad literally blows them to the back. They had coloured up a lot and were looking a lot like minature mum and dads so I thought it might be time they were hungry. Although since then I have syringed some fry powder into the cave just in case. Yeah dad, lets see you get the powder out now! Muahahahaha!!

Lyarlla I can't see them eating the fry powder, they're a bit too big for it really. I've seen my previous spawns eating the left over brine shrimp and blood worm I feed the bettas (when they were in their tank) and they LOVED the lettuce.

My one remaining baby is about 2.5cm now and I'm moving it from one barracks chamber to the next at the moment. They've gotten really really gross with that brown, rust coloured algae of late and the BN appears to love it! So it's getting a smorgasbord at the moment :D

Here's a short, blurry video. I can't seem to zoom in well with my digital camera on video mode. But you can see their little tails wagging and daddy being protective!

The babies are escaping the cave and dad is going nuts trying to get them to stay put! They are so tiny and fragile. I cant wait till they breed again and to top things off, my bluegrass guppies has MORE babies!! W00hoo! I've cleared out a tank to make more room (and dumped filthy fish poo infested water onto the white carpet in the process turning it BROWN (OMG)!!!)

LOL... now try to count them all Lyarlla!!!!!! I recounted my albino long fins the other day about 10 times and eventually got to 19 babies but still not convinced (sure I counted one twice along the way).

Ha - didn't you know white carpet isn't supposed to attract white substances! (hope it all came out for you)

Are you sure they haven't all escaped the log and are now hiding in your tank? I know my albino longfins are so small it's hard to see them on the gravel - only see them on the glass but they hide behind things well.

Fingers crossed they're still there for you Cassi

I hope they are just hiding but I really doubt it. I've never seen the male let them out this early, or even him leaving the cave this early.

They still had a small amount of their yellow yolk sac this morning when I saw them so it's doubtful they've been allowed out! Maybe the Peppermint and the BN had a fight over the cave and the Pepp won! He loves going in there.. I once saw him trying to entice the female BN in. I think he's ready to have his own babies, pity I don't have a female pepp for him..and I don't have $200+ to buy one for him.

Gee I hope the pep hasn't done anything he'll regret later! It is possible he's claimed the log but I would really hope if he has done the dirty he's just kicked them out and some will survive...

What will people think! Thinking of buying an escort for your fish! Sounds like she's an expensive girl too! LOL

You'd have to be unlucky not to get a girl out of a batch of 4 - go for it!

Only trouble is it takes a couple of years for fry to get up to breeding size with peps but that's the way I'm going to go rather than buy a pair at this stage.

There's a few pep fry around at the moment for around the $10 mark - breeding pairs around $220 - $250!

I FOUND THEM!!!!!! all around the surface of the tank! counted 26, could be more hiding around the place. gonna get some lettuce and zuccini and hope they come down to feed...or might give catching them a go and whack them in the 2ft betta grow out. Be easier for them to find food in there I think

Thank god no one has eaten them! Phew
