jo oakley
Hi guys I was in Melbourne yesterday and stopped of at an aquarium on the way home. Had a good chat to the lady behined the counter, She asked if I had seen the new heaters. They keep a small amount of water around 24c( can't be alterd). The thing it's self is about 3cmx6cm, flat and black Has anyone used them? are they the micro heater I have read about in the USA? the cost is $29.95 not a cheap way to keep Bettas warm in a small space. Can you used reptile heat pads to keep jars warm?
lpiasente
Yes you can use the heat mat but as they don't have a thermosat it can be dangerous. What size jar are we talking about?
Callatya
As lpiasente said, they have no thermostat. They keep the water Xdegrees above room temperature, that X being dependant on the amount of water they are heating. Take a smallish jar and a hot day and you have betta soup. I'm not sure if you could attach a reptile thermostat to them, but that'd be an expensive proposition given that a 25w heater would work out at about 1/4 the cost. Yes you can use some types of reptile mats, also some underwater lights (same problem, no thermostat) and I believe there are some that use modified waterbed heaters. There are quite a few options It depends on your setup.
