Beano
Does the metal halide lighting cost much to run? Don't those bulbs get really hot? How long are you supposed to have it on for? Do you have another regular bulb as well so you can enjoy the tank without algae overgrowth?
Phil
Not sure on cost, does it matter when u want ur plants to grow? Yep they do get hot, thats why u usually hang them above the aquarium and not close to the water/cover glass etc. Not sure how long they are meant to run, but i would say atleast normal time so that the photoperiod for the plants is right. I think so long as you achieve a balance between lighting, co2 and fertlisers, algae shouldn't be a problem. I know hardly anything about it as i am sure you can tell, all i know is that they are good :D
Daniel
unless its a large tank, or marine setup there are cheaper and less intesive options for lighitng than MH, depending on wattage MH will usually cost more to run.
