Ventrals On Bettas

Ventral fins are used by a betta when they want to walk from one small drying puddle of water to the next - of course they breathe air while they are traveling over land... :)

Who knows though - perhaps the ventral fins are the link between fish and the first to emerge from the waters and walk on land - bettas already have the ability to breathe air .....

Actually.... ventral fins are used for stability and manoeuvring while swimming.... bettas with no ventrals are not deficient in any way apart from aesthetic looks and perhaps are not as agile in the water as others - but then there'e no betta swimming olympic events so it's not that big an issue for ventralless bettas.... bettas in captivity don't need to worry about agility to avoid predators.....

The airforces of the world have taken the idea of ventral fins to add stability to their high tech aircraft - have a look at planes like the F16 .... apparently these fins on the plane assist in stability and ability to turn at high speeds.....

Yep.... no ventrals = not suitable for showing.... but as far as I know its not genetic so ok for breeding them and as pets they are fine.... and they can still jump out of tanks and do all the other things bettas do to amuse themselves and us :)

Haven't got one to wave at me with their ventral fin yet ...
