Peta
Okay so this weekend I'm moving house so this means.... moving fish!!! So I thought I would ask for some tips. Should I bag them (then where can I get bags from?!) Should I look at buying some plastic containers with lids and moving them in that... Current set up is.... 2ft tank just under half filled with Cheery Shrimp 2ft tank with 8 fighters (my other spawn) - four of which have been separated in a 'betta barracks' on the side of the tank... 2-20L tank with LOTS of Guppies (blue mosaic's and red chilies which I will be very careful not to mix! - There are going in 2 - 2ft tanks once we've moved) 2-10L tanks with my HM Blue/Purple Dragon boy and HM pink/purple Girl I'd like to 'preserve' as much of the water as possible of course, hence thinking of the tub idea... I'm not feeding them the day before, and am not moving them out till the day after most of the big stuff has already been moved (they'll be one of the last things we move out) So yes - anyone got some tips and suggestions? I'm not experienced in this at all, the last time I moved I had only 4 males and 4 females, and that didn't go overly well managed to kill my MG boy (he was the first fish death for me ) ... so would like to avoid that as much as possible. :)
Anasfire
You can get bags from your LFS, they may charge you 20c each but that's pretty reasonable. Remember to bag them 1/3 water 2/3 air Tanks are the last thing to be moved and the first to be set up. As long as you keep the filters moist you won't need to reserve all that much water, as all the good bacteria will still be alive in the filter medium and will add to the new water when you turn it back on. It's not an established tank but it's not starting from scratch either. Even if you can get those 5L round storage tubs with lids from Sam's warehouse or crazy clarks (like $2 ea) and fill them with water that should be enough, one 5L tub for each tank and their filters in large zip lock bags or something to stop them drying out. This is what I did when I moved and I didn't lose a single fish, and I had a 3.4ft community tank (made of 10mm glass...took 3 of us to carry it upstairs), a 4ft oscar tank plus 2 x 2ft community tanks
Tara
I recently moved from Nowra N.S.W to Eagleby in Q.L.D I moved 24 bettas in beanie boxes with lids, I had the beanie boxes not even half full with water and packed them into boxes with newspaper dividing them. They travelled really well and didnt even look stressed. When I unpacked them all I had to do was remove some water and some crap from the bottom then just topped up the water, fed them and didnt have to worry about them until I got unpacked, but if you arent moving far I would just bag them and place in a box. I kept as many filters as I could in fish water so I could set up the tanks once they were all unpacked and I also had a couple of juice bottles full of aged water. fishbites
I use 20litre buckets (about $12 from BCF or Bunnings with lid) to move fish in.... they come in handy for storing gravel and other things too.... Also I got a couple of live bait air pumps from BCF (about $10 each and come with airstone and air line) to aerate the water if I have a fair few fish in a bucket... that way the fish at least get transported in their own water and i find buckets are easier to move around than plastic tubs.... if you use these air pumps you can just attach a live sponge filter to it if you prefer instead of the air stone supplied... The jarred bettas can travel light as charlie suggested.... or bagged as Cassi suggested.... put them in a styro box with a lid and they should travel well with a bit of news paper for extra packing if needed round the bags/jars... Peta
Thanks for the tips I managed to get some bags from the fish shop up the road from work and bagged everyone up. Although Cassie I think I'll need to get you to show me how to bag fish next meet up!! I had no idea ROFL Sadly there was one death, one of my red chile guppy females didn't make it, nor did a baby blue mosaic guppy .. but that was it. Oh and my Purple HM dragon boy either got a case of fin rot or chewed his own tail! (I'm leaning towards the chewing) so his tail looks no where near as pretty as it use to (damn him!) But other then that, every one seems to be happy with their new homes.
