(and they never eat their tails)

Ho hum, no come-back to that one - Oh yes there is ... that's 'coz they can't reach the stumpy little things!

Hmm, what/where is this breeder register you speak of? No, DON'T tell me, NO MORE FISH for me! I don't ever intend to breed so it's a moot point for me to go looking for girls. Always happy to lend a boy to someone who wanted to bring their girl over though, so long as I don't gotta watch them tear each other up :D

Such high bids are not uncommon on Aquabid but as far as I know, the fish rarely actually change hands for those prices.

Ah, yes, being a huge volume eBay seller, I thought I would check out the possiblity of "shill bidding". However the winner appears to have been a legit American who's won several different fish from an assortment of different sellers ranging from $25, to $100 & then this. Now, I could understand such an amount a little better if it had a tail to speak of! :D There was an opaque white HM Rosetail that went for $440(?) a couple of weeks ago, same deal, buyer USA.

I just know what has happened in the past, including with some Australian bidders who were members of another betta forum I used to participate on. I know they bid over $500 for a tri-band, but I am pretty sure that wasn't what they paid. The seller was so flattered that they thought the fish was worth that much that they ended up with a very good deal on not one, but several fish (if I a remembering correctly). But as the auction is a binding contract, you'd have to be willing to part with the $1,000 in case the seller wasn't so easily flattered and didn't offer to waive the contracted price!

That's happened to me so many times selling on eBay - I pay $1 for something, it sells for $120 & I email the buyer saying, "Hey, I gotta sleep at night $?? will do thanks!" I once sold 3 x identical new items in one night, paid $14 ea & they sold for $250 ea, sigh, they were the days but greedy excecs have screwed it for everyone now.

LMAO with my run lately I'm in a tailspin about paying $25 for a fish (plus quarantine etc which is amazingly inexpensive when one considers what's involved).

That wouldn't surprise me, those Thai guys are just amazing (especially our Ketapang Jeff) - more obliging, sweet & polite guys you could not hope to meet - I always add $2 to cover paypal fees whenever I've bought a fish & we argue for about 10 emails because they want to give me a refund!
