Lyarlla
So since I've had a lot of my betta moved to new housing while my fishroom recovers from columnaris, some of the ladies are in shared accommodation for the time being according to who they are getting on with. Hydra and Mystique (being green dragon sisters) are in together as they get nasty around anyone else. Solar (having lost her gold dragon HM sister) is in with Birkita (who lost 3 of her sisters and the other 2 (Ali and Davina) are in "intensive care" for a while). Solar and Birkita normally get along, (unless a green dragon is involved!). However, this morning as I went to feed them I found they'd decided to take the next step and try and be "more than friends". They were nudging and curling around each other like they were trying to spawn!!! At first I thought maybe they were just trying to have an intimidation contest but there was no nipping involved... it was all curl curl curl and spawn talk between those two!! Anyone else had two ladies who have decided to try and be 'more than friends'? I didnt think this sorta stuff happened in the fish world...but each to their own. Make love not war and all that jazz :)

Lyarlla
OMG, Ive come home and theyve built a nest with eggs... Who knew a red dragon HM would ever be so taken with a VT female?? And they are definately girls because I have seen the parents (and the males were long finned)... And now I'm seeing them both drop eggs, lol. They are very confused about who is rolling who and both end up nudging each other like they are preparing to get rolled over and squeezed, but neither do, and then they both drop some eggs and go pick them up and put them in the nest. Lyarlla
The dozen or so eggs that were in the nest have now been eaten. Both girls seem bored with each other now. :D
paul
At least you got the sexes of your fish right... My first spawning attempt was marred by the fact that my "girl" ended up being a "boy". Surprise-surprise there were no eggs from that union! To my defense, I have to say that sometimes, flaring for aggression and flaring for sexy times, looks remarkably similar to a novice betta keeper. Lyarlla
Hahaha, Ive done that before too! The ultimate rule is "if it lays eggs its female", I guess. They have laid more eggs and Solar is tending to the eggs...

ninoid12
lmfao, remember, this is a pg rated website well sadly the eggs will not hatch, but its interesting nonetheless lol
splendidbetta
2 females spawning? That is incredible! You should contact Joep and tell him your observations. He may be able to do something with it. http://www.bettaterritory.nl/BT-Contact.htm
Lyarlla
Yeah I was under the impression that it just didnt happen ever. Maybe they just got too desperate? I dont imagine theyd pick another female though if there was a male around. Solar is normally pretty keen on Opaltine my opaque HM.
hobbygodz
Mabye they could adopt some fry? I'm sure they would be good parents. Hey Ghengis, can you p.m. that link to me? - Brad.
Chuckie
are you positive eggs came out of both?
Lyarlla
Yes, they were dropping eggs about 10cm from each other which is why I found it so odd. They werent actually squeezing each other although they were nosing each other a lot.
Lyarlla
Hmm perhaps it was because they could see one of my males? They were in a plastic tub, about 15L, which has not quite clear see through sides. Nearby I have another tank with a male (who normally never misses an opportunity to show off). Perhaps they could see him and got excited?
tha_krust
i once had 2 female jewel cichlids whom courted each other and both laid at the same time and both cared for the eggs and looked at each other in disbelife when they didnt hatch went bad and i scraped them of the rock
redfin538
Hi all, if anyone comes back to read this i purchased a betta book today that got alot of its info from sientists. Apparently male bettas dont have y chromosomes like human males and there gender is determined by other factors (not that uncommmon in the animal world). Anywho one day some of the afformentioned scientistsd got ahold of some betta females and decided lets do a little opperation and removed most of their overies and let them get on with their life(poor girls) now this is where the surprise came in the girls and they definately wher girls turned into fully functioning males!! thats not the end of the scientific horrors but that was verry interesting and can perhaps help explain the females confusion.
