Spawning, have I got it right?

Hey All,

I've done all my research and I've conditioned my fish, etc,etc,etc....but I just get this feeling that something isn't right. I want 2 spawn 2 Betta's bought at my local shop. Male crown tail Cambodian and female Cambodian ???VT???.

A few things have me worried:

1. the fem is older than the male (and alittle bigger). I've read that this can make spawning difficult...does this mean impossible?

2. the fem was a dominant fish in a female only tank. Longer fins than the other females. WOuld bite the other females even though she started out smallest of them all. Grew bigger and more rapidly than the other females. She also made bubble nest while in with the other girls, did the wiggle dance at other females. When I was conditioning the fish, I place the male and fem side-by-side and they looked excited. However, now that i've put them in the spawning tank together, she looks disinterested. What I'm worried about is - is she really a girl, is she a lesbian, or just not that into him yet coz he hasn't built her a brand new house (bubble nest)!

3. He hasn't even attempted to build a bubble nest (48hrs so far).

I really want to breed this pair and I haven't done this before. Any words of advice.

I can send a pic of her if needed.. or can I attach pic to post??

Hey Paul - welcome to AusAqua...

1. No not impossible - if he can't wrap himself round her enough then it won't work till he grows up a bit more (assuming she doesn't grow any more too!)

2. Is she a girl - possibly but if 'she' has been building bubblenests there's a chance 'she's' a he. Two males side by side will flare at each other - but in the same tank usually end up flaring and trying to intimidate the other before one scarpers (they don't always have a battle to the death). Is she just not into him yet - possibly - if he isn't impressing her that much with a bubble nest or she isn't ready to spawn she won't be that excited either.

3. He hasn't even attempted to build a bubble nest (48hrs so far) - some males never build a bubblenest - I had one spawn where the eggs were put amongst some floating riccia. I've read on here of others experiences with no bubblenests as well.

Any words of wisdom.... well firstly be patient and they will work things out between themselves - just keep an eye on them though as a death can occur if one is ready and the other isn't (it's not only the males who kill females - females have been known to kill males as well).

If you post a pic of the 'girl' I'm sure a few of our experts here could give you a clue as to whether she's just a big girl or a developing boy.

Hi Paul. I think a picture would be a good idea. You will need to use a photo hosting site like photo bucket for your pic's. After you have uploaded them it is simply a matter clicking the 'insert image icon' and copying in the url to embed the photo. There is a topic on how to put in photo's, I think it's in the technical support forum.

There is an article on sexing bettas at www.ausaqua.net.

There are articles on using photos from photobucket and flickr here

How long has the water been in the tank? "New" water without much organic load isn't sticky, and a bubble nest may just be breaking up as he builds it. Have a look at the sticky posts in this forum. Especially this.

I very sincerely doubt that bettas have sexual preferences in the way that we do, so if your female is female, she's not a lesbian. Some bettas just don't like each other for complex reasons, not because they'd simply prefer someone of the same gender!

Thanks everyone,

I'll give them a bit more time to become accustomed to one another, and hopefully he'll build a nest, and hopefully she'll get into him. They don't seem to flare aggressively at each other, and they seem to want to swim along-side each other while showing off to each other... so here's hoping they find the spark!

LILLI, thanks again. I read your post about 'sticky' water last night (after I did all the set up), and, I had actually put fresh water in... Lotsa plants though (on one side of the tank). I hadn't read this anywhere earlier. Maybe a bit of time will again help. P.S. I hope you didn't think I was serious about the lesbian comment.

I'll try upload some pics in the next couple days if I can figure out how. It might help me be sure that I'm not wasting time.

Hope to send some pics of fry soon! Paul

So, I've had to separate them again. "She" has taken the dominant role and has torn his fins. Shame. I was hoping that they'd get some good times goin... but I guess you can't force these things.

Hopefully you'll see some pics of her attached here:

I've tried hard to see the egg spot, and I've glimpsed a small white dot, but it's not easily visible, and only noticeable if ur really looking for it. So, is she really a she, or a plakat male?

Thanks again everyone,

A bit embarassing, but it looks like a classic "crying game" scenario and she's a he. Shame - I like the coluration of my fish and was hoping for more similarly coloured fish.

The other females I have are a little drab and boring, but I'll give breeding one of them with my male crowntail a go in a week or so, if it looks like he's recovered enough. Hopefully their offspring won't be drab or boring.

Hope I can update you guys with some good news in the near future.

Cheers again,

Paul
