splendidbetta
Does anyone know if there are guppies that have been bred to have 180* caudal spreads? <_<
killimike
I didn't see them, but Phil apparently had some guppies at the first SBG that were practically 180.
splendidbetta
Oh awesome, did anyone take pics? <_<
killimike
Of course not! That would have been way too sensible I wish I had. I think Davo took them home in the end.
Terribletegs
No 'halfmoon' variety is recognised by the IFGA, but I'm sure there are people out there trying to breed them! You'd start with a delta tail and select for increased spread and better carriage.
splendidbetta
Thanks I found this photo. Not quite HM but close. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3093/275275...52966dd1b_o.jpg
hobbygodz
I saw them Stefan. From memory they carried about the same caudal as your pic, though their form was better.
davo
No, they weren't 180 degrees.. They were more or less 150 However, they sort of died off a month or so back..so sorry folks <_<
Terribletegs
The fish in the photo looks more like a roundtail with really good spread. Maybe try starting with roundtails then?

Phil
Yep there are guppies with 180* spread, some slightly over in both male and female. I was importing these gorgeous things from Malaysia earlier in the year but found that they were a small bodied fish with a massive tail and i think this lead to them being a weaker strain. These days weve gone back to importing from srilanka where the strongest guppies in the world come from, but unfortunatly tail size/spread is second to bright colour and thick strong bodies. splendidbetta
Thanks Phil Would it be fairly straightforward to combine the big body and better fins?
Phil
Ive got no idea on guppy breeding, but i figure it would take many generations, just like bettas.

ninoid12
ok, so what would you look for then to breed 180 guppies..... Both male and female with large spread only. Or one having very good body, other very good spread. I wouldnt mind trying this in my communal tank :)
splendidbetta
My guess would be to get some starter stock with combinations of the traits we need, and then breed them together and go from there. If you could find good spread and big body on the same fish, that would be great.
louu
Ive been wanting to breed guppies for a good year now but never had the means! Ive always had a similiar idea (though not nearly as well developed) and would love to see what could come of it! But I wouldnt know where to get the right stock so.. guess not
JUNGLE
Ask someone.....she has the best guppies in Australia. On Aquabid atfg is selling 'half-sun' guppies that have the branching seen in HM Bettas.
Anasfire
I agree, some of the guppy's she had at her store on Sat were AMAZING! makes me want to get into breeding certain strains...but I don't have the room for all the tanks I want here...and I don't want to move lol
JUNGLE
To answer the question about selecting good parents...... I think the most important factor is the caudal peduncle. This muscle needs to be wide and strong enough to support increased finnage.
