Terribletegs
I thought it was bettas? (definitely no apostrophe..)
splendidbetta
"Bettas". That's the most common and grammatically correct usage (even if it's linguistically false, and I can't find anything that shows it is).
killimike
As a linguist, the hypercorrection we see with the use of the apostrophe with a regular plural noun has several causes. Often the motivation is orthographic, with capitalised words, acronyms, abbreviations, to make the 's' more salient. So I would be one to argue that, in casual writing, if we insisted on capitalising BETTA, then using -'s- to form the plural is becoming not uncommon. Cool joke :welcome:
hobbygodz
Awesome guys. Per chance am I actively assisting the rampant ongoing bastardification of our wonderful language whilst my intended purpose was indeed to prevent this process? I'm off to feed my octupii and killifishs/killifish's? ...............Killis............ :D
