fishbites
You even have to watch out of packets of peatmoss too - seems everything has fertiliser in it! I got a bale of canadian peat (no fertiliser) from a local produce barn which I have used in tanks with no problems at all - apart from the dark water aspect (which is not really a problem)
tlc33
peat could be the answer to a lot of my problems.... My water is quite alkaline here.... Now the question would be how to maintain status quo with the addition of peat???
redfin538
On the fish lab thread some people tried decaffinated tea in theyre tanks i tried it and my bettas showed no ill effects but i think it would be best to brew your tea in a cup and add slowly ( as to my approach of dipping the bag in the tank/bowl) as too much can make the water well icky slimy etc.. Chuckie
Hi Tracey, if you run a canister filter, you can put peat in it and it will acidify the water gradually. The good thing about peat, IME, is it doesn't drop the pH too suddenly. If you stand your water 24 hours before using it, with a jar of peat in it, that should help keep the water parameters pretty stable. Just one thing to mention, I always boil and rinse peat before using it in my killi tanks.
tlc33
Thanks for the info Lilli. I am only running sponge filters at the moment. I will try the standing water/peat option and see what happens for next water change.
