lpiasente
During cleaning my a part of my filter broke off and now it doesn't work. I have an internal ehiem but it hasn't been used for about 6 months so it will need cycling, won't it? I have discus and they won't tolerate amonia or nitrates. Will I have a spike? Callatya
Which part broke? Is the tank bare or with gravel etc? It *might* spike, depends on stocking and setup. You can add a bio-booster product like Nitravec or Stability if you like, but that is up to you.
lpiasente
Sorry I wasn't very clear. My canister filter broke. It was a tiny little clip near the impeller My husband said he can proably fix it but he is away until Saturday. In the meantime I have to use the ehiem. If I continue to do daily water canges of say 50% should that help?
Tiggle
Put your media from your canister filter into your ehiem (if itll fit) or put it in a stocking and float it in the tank to keep the bacteria alive and in the tank. this way the bacteria can still preform their function and may migrate into the tank/filter. Tiggle
Which bit.I have bio balls, ceramic noodles filter wool? Everything you can. Im not sure what the role of the bio balls and noodles are but i would imagine both would have bacteria growing on them as would the filter wool. Callatya
If you go that way, I'd consider leaving out the finer media and just use the larger stuff as there won't be enough flow around the wool to keep everything in there chugging along and it might have enough debris trapped in it to make it more trouble than it is worth.
