groovy bacterial bloom

OK, well as at Sunday 23 November both tanks had no ammonia, no nitrite ans 40ppm nitrate, so I'd say they are well and truly cycled now. And it's about bloody time!!!

Now for the chemistry stuff - I looked again at the dechlorinator I used and it treats for chlorine, chloramine, lime, blah blah blah but not ammonia (I use pond dechlorinator, have forever, and have never had this issue before). So I assume that the chloramine bond was broken by the dechlor, releasing ammonia, which there was no ammonia remover to treat. In my established tanks it's probably not a problem as the established bacteria consumes the ammonia pretty rapidly, but as these weren't established tanks the colony took ages to develop to a size adequate to get on top of it.

Amazing that chloramine can release SO much ammonia, though.
