Raising common BN fry

Hi

Just a couple of questions about raising Bristlenose Fry. My BN spawned a cple of weeks ago in my commy tank (well it's only got the BN pair, 4 cories and around 10 neons, with about 300 snails :fish: ) about 30 of the resulting fry have survived to be almost 1cm in lenth (including tail and all)

now what I wanted to know is how long does it take for BN to grow to a saleable size, and what size is that?

and what is the best to feed them on? I feed them my TA food that escapes the neons (but add about 10 times the amount for the neons as I feed the rest of the animals in tehre with it) as well as Algae wafers/discs. is there anything else I should be feeding them that may make them grow faster?

cheers :cheer:

About the earliest you can sell them is about 3-4cm. There normally strong enough at this stage to sell.

Never raised BN before, but at a guess it would be about 2months, maybe a little earlier.

You could try feeding them lettuce that has been boiled and also cucumber thats been boiled. Keep this diet mixed with wafers.

The first spawn of bristlenose always seem to take a while growing. It may actually be around 3 months during which time you should see more small ones appearing. Our original 3 lived in community tanks for over 6 years before we saw any fry, (Cichlids mostly). Last year they were in a tank with a old Angelfish ( blind in one eye) when we saw the 3mm fry. What a journey we have had our 44 inch display tank was converted to a fry tank, the angelfish was placed in the filter tank for the barracks. Hard to think we would ever have less than 200 BN at any time. My minimum size to sell is 5cm, with 6cm as the other main size. 7cm and 8cm are often available.

Diet is kept to the common foods the average person is going to use, so basically Hikari algae wafers the 1 kg commercial use only pack is available at the shop on Anzac highway for around $110. it is good value and any novice people that end up owning some are going to have success at keeping them alive without the fish refusing to eat anything other than the soft foods. We also give them left over brine shrimp and blood worms.
