Tammy
Hi everyone, I am just starting out with bettas and would like to know how you guys are keeping your bettas? Like do you have them in Large tanks and use betta barracks? Or have you got jars of males lined up? Any helpful hints on keeping healthy bettas like water addatives etc. At the moment I only have 3 males and have got them in separate 16 inch tanks with heater set to 26-27 degrees and no filters. Just doing partial water changes every week and siphoning off the bottom. I have just bought some filters for each tank so tomorrow will head back to shop for the sponges... once I work out how to use them I will set them up in tank. Can I leave the filters in and running when I am trying to spawn? Sorry for asking so many questions and thanks for putting up with my ignorance. I am a Real real beginner... but at least I am a fast learner Thanks guys, Tammy
Jess
Hey Tammy, I keep my Bettas in all sort of housing - 3L, 10L, 20L etc. Some I even keep in the spawn tub for ages. I use a declorinator, and a small amount of black water extract for my water changes. I age the water in buckets overnight if it is not an emrgency water change. How many litres is 16" is that a 2ft? (too lazy too look it up ) You will need to cycle the tank before the filters are efficient at biological filtration. This link is good read: Nitrogen cycle Do you know someone who has a fish tank that has filtration? It's always easier to pop some floss or filter in someone elses tank (that hasn't got diseases) to get some bacteria to get the tank going faster. Some people have filters in the tank & some don't. I do when I have the spare media etc. It is not compulsory. But it is a good idea to have a filter running in another tank, so when the fry are older enough, you can pop it in :notsure:
Robbies Betta
yeah, basically what Jess said. I keep sum females together and then a cple in 12L tanks, and the rest of mine are in 2L barracks containers. All of them have heated water also. Figure_8
Can I leave the filters in and running when I am trying to spawn? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hey Tammy Most people turn off the filters when spawning because it makes it very difficult (if not impossible) for the male to make a bubblenest in constantly moving water, plus newly hatched fry could be harmed/sucked in by the filter even when its on slow. I don't usually use filters in my spawn tanks though.
Chuckie
Tammy, your set up sounds just about ideal. That's how I keep my breeders. I also have a heated filtered barracks in the garage but it's a pain to keep warm in winter and loses heaps of water by evaporation. A really valuable additive to the water that I use is indian almond leaf, but I think it may be illegal in WA. Black water extract or dried banana leaf are good alternatives. HTH. Figure_8
A really valuable additive to the water that I use is indian almond leaf, but I think it may be illegal in WA. Nope not illegal. Perfectly acceptable to bring into WA from anywhere with Aus providing it is perfectly dry and in no way green. You don't even have to have these inspected. I had a nice long chat to the WA customs officers about this (and other things that are hard to get in WA) a few months ago. Black water extract or dried banana leaf are good alternatives. HTH. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Blackwater extract is really hard to get here also. I haven't seen any!! But its fine to bring over. Same deal as above with the banana leaves. Tammy
Not sure yet. I have asked Lisa (someone) to hold onto a couple of very impressive Crowns and a couple of other rather nice little pairs... before I get them bundled up I am hopingI might be able to get some other westies in the freight to share costs. I know I just missed a shipment by a few weeks so I think I might be outta luck... Will have to see. I will let you know though! :giggle:
