http://ausaqua.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=2722 :D Hey Tessa  if you go to the site Ive mentioned this will cover everything you need to know about setting up a tank . I refer to it often . Only thing is if your picking your fish up Friday you need to get a wriggle on and set his tank up ASAP. Good luck and cheers.

If you use a product like Cycle you can speed up the tank cycling process and add your betta to the tank straight away. You might just have to do partial water changes every couple of days. It would be a really good idea to get an ammonia test kit and if you can afford it a nitrite test kit as well but ammonia will kill your fish long before nitrite gets a chance to.

No, it shouldn't stress them out that much. Just take them home directly. That is, don't stop off to do the grocery shopping or anything like that. Just go straight home. When you get home, open the bag, fold the bag open (like rolling your sleeves up) and then use the fold to hang the bag off a corner of the tank. Put the lid back on so your boy doesn't jump out. Now every 10 or 15 minutes, add some water from the tank to increase the water in the bag by about 25%. After about an hour, you should have added enough water to double the volume in the bag and the temperature should be the same as the tank. Net him out of the bag and put him in the tank. Chuck away the bag water as well as the bag.

Or, you could be totally lazy like me and just stick him the tank straight away without worrying about acclimatisation or any diseases that might be lurking in the LFS water.
