Disaster

I have been mainly offline for a while- some work pressures plus a disater in my home last Thursday.. I came home to find one of my tank shelves had collapsed, it was a 4 layer with 5 tanks, my QT tank, my showfish tank and 3 breeding tanks full of fry from orangeline, gold and red/white BF HMs. There was water, gravel and broken glass everywhere and fish bodies :( - I sadly picked up the nearest and... she wiggled! :giggle: Grabbed a clean takeaway container and put some water from my other tank in it, off came the shoes and I was madly searching for fish everywhere (and bleeding everywhere before long too). Also trying to pick up the broken glass and gravel, heaters, burnt out filters-you name it- plus 2 tanks were stuck at an angle in the collapsed shelving and had to manovered out. It took me 40 mins to find the last fish and the amazing thing is... They are ALL still alive, battered, missing scales and torn tails but still there as at this morning over a week later. :cheer: I also poured the tiny bit of water remaining in each of the fry tanks together and have a tank of mixed fry still alive and growing...go figure. My show plans are drastically altered, One tank is too far gone to save and about 100+ fry lost but I still feel lucky- 15 adults all show and/or imports still alive and happy. These are some tough fish Cheers :giggle: Deb

FAROUT! what a disaster!! I am very pleased to hear all your fish survived with the exception of young fry. Are they all coping well? Which shelving unit was it? Was it one of those metal frame ones you buy from the hardware stores? with like a 75kg limitson each shelf? (I have one of those :giggle: ) I hope all your cuts are healing also :giggle:

OMG Deb! What a thing to come home to! :giggle: You must have been totally devastated! Bettas really are tough little critters you've got to give them that! I don't know of any other fish (aside from perhaps gouramis) that could survive something like that. :giggle:

Oh No, that would've been the worst to come home to I'm glad that u managed to collect the majority of them, and they're still breedable :giggle: I had a female jump out and I found her on the ground still and bit stiff. Hopefully I put her in sum water and within 5 mins she was swimming around again :giggle:

Thanks for the messages all No Fay it wasn't all steel, had timber shelves but it was the uprights that bent and ripped out :giggle: and I think a certain kitten had jumped on the highest shelf from the side and that bent one upright and the other ripped out. It has now been reduced to 3 tiers with only little breeding tanks on it. The fish seem fine- all the longfin ones (my HMS Grrr...) are RS as far as showing go but 1 plakat is unmarked and the other had minor scale damage so is getting the final checkover tomorrow as far as showing goes (we bench Sunday). Others are in the breeding tanks now that we have set them up again. The thing that amazes me is the way they survived so long out of water. I found my yellow HM male in the corner (under a dustball oops) right at the end and except for a completely wrecked tail he is fine and feisty. As far as my injuries go a few cuts on the arms and feet aren't a big worry, I HAD to take my shoes off or I may have trod on one amongst the mess and not known. I just :giggle: my fish Deb

Noooooooooooooo!!!! Debi! What a disaster indeed. :giggle: You poor thing! Am not surprised that they lived though. I have seen the VTs at the wholesalers arrive with NO WATER and are fine as soon as they are released into the cup. As long as they are wet they can survive a long time. However, they are usually not in the best of condition after wrestling with the concrete. Lots of stress guard and anti-bacterial treatment. Keep them warm. and your show fish?? sigh....... :giggle: Good luck, and um yeah - what shelf unit?? Cheers, J

Oh my gosh! :giggle: Deb, good on you for getting in there and rescuing the situation. What a blow for your show fish, but thank goodness so many survived. And thank goodness you survived such a drama too -- must have been heart attack material! I hope your plans get back on track soon as. All the best!

OMG I had the same reaction as Najina - what a horror story! Deb, you have not had a run of good luck lately! Moron couriers and now collapsing shelves. Hopefully your turn is over now. I'm so sorry about your show plans.

No brand for the unit :D , just timber shelves with metal uprights, seemed very strong and sturdy but what we didn't realise was that the uprights were not as strong as they seemed, after one bent you could see they were thinner metal than they looked (round). We don't have any good stores here but the next shelf unit we get will be from Bunnings and rated. Good news is the remaining fry are growing well Cheers Deb
