Are any of the Thai breeders out there doing traditional colours? Something that is non-metallic, non-masked, and still looks a million bucks? Are these colours falling by the wayside or are there people out there maintaining them? I ask, because today i saw my ideal fish. An extended red VT, clean colour, no irrid, no black, no BF, JUST RED. I haven't a partner for him, so I didn't buy, but it got me to wondering if the classic red VT is threatened in this ever-changing market. The explosion of the copper and platinum colours have just taken the hobby by storm, as did the HM before that, and the CT before that etc etc. Do you think that over the next 5 years there will be a matte revival? dragging all of those older colours out of the closet? Do you even like the classics? do you feel they were simply a stepping stone to get to the gold masked beauties that you see today?

I like the classic colours and also the marbles. I'm not really into the coppers or golds even though I have a couple of copper plakats. I currently have two 'aged' extended red CT's and a few red VT's as well as the classic blue. I must admit I have a special attachment for the common multi VT as well! :cheer:

Excellent question. This was discussed a little at the judging course. There is a real concern that the traditional blue/turq/steel lines are being swamped by the metallics (from the imbellis/smaragdina infusion) Dan Young is particularly keen to keep the two separate. There is even a possiblity of introducing another colour class to keep them separate. Like the marble gene, once metallics get in the blood line, it's really hard to get out. If the standards continue to favour ALL OVER colour, then the masks will dominate. The mattes have the traditional black head. Certainly the 2 most popular colours in veiltails are solid red and solid blue. Cheers, someone

I have sorta turned back to the non metallics. When i first came across them it was exciting and i really liked them , but now, i have gone back to the pastels, and especially at the moment Red Cambodians, which i never thought i would of liked again 6 months ago. I currently have a red Cambo BF DT HM Pair and a F1 50% Giant Cambo HM pair from robin and i really like them :cheer:

well, I'm probably going to work next on form in metallics, simply because colour isn't an issue. Copper is copper is copper, but a perfect circle in copper is something else. But I still haven't quite decided. If I get bored I'll chuck some marble genes, butterfly and melano into the mix. I have to say that at the moment I really do like the metallics. Maybe I am not as mature as those that appreciate the traditional non-metallic colours

Not really into the copper myself but love the red gold. After a clean body colour in this. I really like the matt colour in other colours and find it annoying when I get some metallic but not full coverage and would prefer none. the Lfs seem to sell the red and blue better and those 'fringetails' take a bit of moving. By the way, have two Lfs up here wanting smaller splendans(a size we are ready to move them on, approx 4 months) , anything they can get their hands on. So if you have some stock to move I have well trained Lfs. Of course only buy at the same price as the suppliers <_<

Jo, I have heaps of pastel CTs and some white platinum deltas, and maybe some coppers too that I need to clear out of the fishroom to embark on the next phase of my breeding plans. would they be interested, do you think? If so, in how many?

Oh lisa, forgot to tell you, i took some unwanted females to the fish hatchery, they gave me $20 credit for 9 females. I asked and she said that just give them a call when you are ready to off load, i am sure they can take as many females but just limited space for males.

Well I'm a blue person through and through, although I do find the 'metallic' colours interesting I'd also like to see the BF pattern develop some more, there aren't many fish out there with a clean division on colour consistant over all fins. I did read about a breeder that is trying to achieve the perfect red, a HM that is entirely red from nose to tail and he's definately getting close to his goal. I also have an old delta that is 99.9% extremely intense red.

I am fan of the matte colours. The turq's and red's and blues should be kept the same. It is a shame, since the cambo gene was mixed in with ext red, the fullness of the red is a lower grade. This is mainly in HM's, the CT's still have the instense red it appears. The metallics certainly seem to be threatening the matte colours

I too love the classic irridescent colors, and if I ever come by a pair of matte blue HMs I'll certainly keep them as a seperate line. It is a good thing that several breeders around the world are serious about preserving the classic colours and I hope we will still have good classics in the future. On a side note, Pure Classic irridescent means that there is no wash, no marble, no melano... just straight matte royal blue, turq and steel in the history of the line. Same for non-irid non-metallic types. This is what the good breeders out there are trying to maintain.
