bluebetta
I went to our local nursery that has fish supplies to get some plants for my Fighters breeding tank and maybe a filter but they were a bit to expensive so I bought a little airstone and some plants. I put the airstone on the old air pump that we found ( it use to be in mums gold fish tank ) I put the stone in and turned it on and it is really noisy. Does anyone n\know how to make it a bit quieter. Blue Betta
Chuckie
the pump is noisy? or the stone? is the stone rattling against something? maybe the pump needs a new diaphragm.
E-n
does it sound like its "simmering" or "hissing"?? if you have gravel try putting it in the gravel so it's submerged... that helps
Callatya
If the pump is noisy then you have to work out why. Is it vibrating against something? If so, use the little loop to hang it from somewhere near the tank, making sure you have a 'drip loop' in your airline tubing. Is the diaphragm (the rubber bit inside that helps move the air through) worn? They are about $6 to replace. If the airstone is noisy, then you have the adjust the surface of the water so they don't POP so loudly. Adding some duckweed can help, or putting a little section of bubblewrap over the immediate popping area. All you really want the air to do is ripple the surface of the water. Not like a bubbling couldron, but more like a flowing stream. This gives it a greater surface area, and that gives it more places where it can gather fresh oxygen. If you bubble it too hard it can't hold in to the gases effectively, so you just want a nice gentle bubble. You can by two way valves that you can attach to your rtubing so that you can turn the air flow up or down. They can be a bit pricey, but the cheaper option is a little tap, which allows you some room to adjust. Don't turn it too far down though, the backpressure from the blocked airline can damage the pump.
Figure_8
another option to adjust flow is to use a double or gang valve. By slighly opening one of the spare outlets you drop the air pressure in the hose without causing any backpressure I have the same set up in my laundry, so if needed I can take a pic to explain better. bluebetta
It is the stone that is noisy. I might put a little tap in and put some bubble wrap there cause it is like a boiling cauldron not a stream.
