Chuckie
<< was terribly confused - so much so that I imagined seeing elodea in Phil's tank - so it was actually PETER's fault, not mine ...

Daniel
It actually was a build up of Hydrogen Sulfide, id researched it before, thinking in the beginning it was the accumulation of oxygen bubbles , but the smell (i can't find an emoticon to express it ;( )- and my tank is in my bedroom, i am now more punctual with water changes and gravel vacs, and it hasn't occured again. On a side note: Is denitrafying bacteria in substrate, the same as whats refeered to in reefing as live sand?sorry to go so off-topic
PeterJ
Not exactly the same - live sand usually includes aerobic and anaerobic (denitrying) bacteria, but it's harder to set up the anaerobic processes reliably in a tank.
