dyslexicdaver
I was thinking about using a free 18 litre tank as a community female Betta tank. Is this a good idea or not? Do females get along in one tank? If so how many would you suggest in this one it is about 18 litres(Aqua one AR126) I will soon have 4 girls Dave
splendidbetta
Nice tank I'd put 6 girls in. They might settle down and get along after a while, or they might not, in which case you need to remove them. good luck ;)
Jess
Great tank! Lots of floating plants on the top and you should be fine :)
splendidbetta
yes, lots of floating plants - bettas love to fight close to the surface.
dyslexicdaver
Great tank! Lots of floating plants on the top and you should be fine Faewyn What floating plants do Bettas like, I've never had any "intentional" floating plants. Figure_8
watersprite is a good one. It can be planted in substrate, but its just as happy if not happier floating around the top of your tank.
Jess
Hornwart would be ideal (It is hard to kill) and it grows like mad and you will be able to use it in your spawn tanks.
Chuckie
I vote for hornwart because it growa like a weed here. riccia is cool, too.
dyslexicdaver
Thanks for the advice, I may have some watersprite in my 3ft tank (or something that looks very similar). It's planted in the Substrate so I never thought of it as a floating plant. Next time I'm in the in the Auburn Aquarium shop I'll look out for Hornwart. Riccia always looks good in the Aquarium landscaping books but have only seen it for sale twice, and when I decided to buy some it was sold. one day perhaps! At least nobbody is saying don't try to keep them together. Thanks Dave
Chuckie
Dave, I don't think I have ever seen hornwart at Auburn. Let me know if you want me to put some in the mail for you.
Callatya
Nah, should be fine, but have a coke bottle or something available should one be tearing the others fin from fin. There are a few very grouchy girls out there, and some rather effeminate looking guys :)
Jess
and you have plenty of hidey places on the bottom to weave in and out from. Some people have nothing on the bottom and everyone in the tank is fair game :)
Celeste84
i've got an 80L tank with 12 girls in it and they're fine together i find that if you ever want to add more girls, add them when they're young and the established females accept them better riccia is definitly good - excellent for spawn tanks as i've found out! banana lillies is another good one - males prefer them more to females though i think as they build their nests under the leaves; elodea (tropical variety) is also good easy to grow and the fish love to hide in it! Figure_8
I've had lots of female community tanks and never had much of a problem with agression. As others have said I've found the key is lots of places to hide. The only time I ever had a problem was a fish called Ten Tonne Tessie and she was a huge wild-type female pk that would tear anything up in the tank regardless of what species it was. I had to keep her in solitary confinement - personally I just think she was old and crabby
