  2. Welcome to the forum Herman. Unless you know exactly what traits both the male and female are carrying it will be hard to predict what you will get. But the best way to understand what traits are being carried is to actually breed the fish and observe the results. Hopefully the parents will survive and you have the chance to try different crossings as well. But even if they don’t you can continue working with the offspring to build your line.
  3. Not sure who the breeders are in Perth.

  6. Hi Dionysus. Welcome. Which city are you in?
  7. Hi, You can call me Dionysus! I’m pretty new to the hobby and really love bettas and other gouramis. I’m looking for a betta breeder in my city primarily since I’d like to support breeders rather than the big chains. My current betta is Fang. He is unfortunately on his way out. I thought he was sick at first but I’ve been reassured that there isn’t anything wrong with him disease wise or anything and that he is just old.
  8. Hi everyone, I'm Herman Williams from Indonesia. I wonder to know what betta you can get if you crossed green metallic male betta with avatar female betta. Thank you all.
  9. Hi, I'm just looking for knowledge bout betta here.

  10. Welcome Alex. The Aquarium Society of Victoria have a sub-group called Victoria Betta. Unfortunately neither have held any events since covid. The ASV normally meet every 2 months in Clifton Hill. VicBetta normally run 1 or 2 events a year.
  11. I am Alex and new to keeping Bettas and have one mail half moon and 3 females. I am based in north Melbourne and I am looking for information and a local group so I can learn how to keep my new friends healthy and happy. Looking forward to gaining access to the forums and making new friends with similar interests

Hello, I am not a breeder or hobbyist. I joined so I could get full access to the genetics subforum for stuff for school. So, hopefully that works out. Thanks!
  14. As far as I can tell from the photos you’re probably correct in your assessment of fin rot. He may also have velvet but I’d need a much closer photo particularly around the head. I honestly can’t remember if Furan also treats velvet but if it doesn’t you would want to give the poor guy a little rest for at least a week before starting on more medications. Just so his organs can recover a bit. Not losing his appetite is a good sign. Velvet requires light thrive so I would cover his tank completely with a towel making it’s a total blackout in there. This will also help him sleep and rest. It’s fine to unwrap and check on him as many times as you like. Just cover up again. Try to remove poop as quickly as possible. Just suck it out with a turkey baster or similar. Uneaten food should be removed immediately. I’d watch him while he eats and remove anything still left after 5-10 minutes. Let us know how he gets on.

Hi Angie. Welcome. This is pretty quiet these days. But please do ask away and I’ll my best to respond as quickly as possible.
  16. Hi Scott. I’m Michael. Welcome to the forum. And welcome back to the hobby. I think it’s great that you’re involving your kids. I was introduced to the hobby when I was 12 but didn’t have a mentor with any knowledge at all. It was basically, here’s a tank and a box of old equipment, do what you like. There was a shop only a 20 minute walk away from my home. My best friend (who lived a couple of doors away) and I spent so much time and most of our pocket money there. I think we stripped that tank and redecorated it nearly every week. I doubt the filter ever made it through a cycle. It was the best time of my life. But I do laugh now when I think about how clueless I was. Shops should be able to order killies from the wholesaler but the quality might be hit and miss. The varieties will also be limited. You should join the Killifish Australia group on Facebook. Serkan Alasya is in that group. He’s been the most consistent breeder of killies in Australia for at least 30 years if not longer. He’s the absolutely best person in the country to get you going with killies. Based in Canberra. I’m not a fan of importing specifically selected bettas. But this is the way people get exactly what they want. It’s expensive and there’s no guarantee those fish will breed. The fish looking a lot different from the photos is also a common complaint. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on imported fish and have nothing to show for it except regret. It’s far better I feel to keep trying with local breeders and shops. Brisbane Betta Breeders are the most active club at the moment and most likely able to get a decent pair in your hands. I’m also looking at getting back into breeding bettas and I’ll be starting with the Brisbane folk and scouring local shops. The shops order fish from the wholesaler sight unseen which is why the quality is so variable. It’s not that the wholesaler doesn’t have good bettas. Females are still an issue though. Nano Tanks Australia in Sydney is worth having a chat with for both killies and bettas. They’re used to dealing with customers from around the country and have a particular interest in niche species. But they are a shop and there are limitations. Good luck with the search and please let us know how you get on. This forum is so quiet these days it would be nice to get it going again.
  17. Hi All, I am Scott, I have been a hobbyist for the past 40 years on and off (work permitting), been out of the hobby for the past five years and finding myself getting back in and involving my two kids (12f,9m) into it. They have their own 2ft tanks that I help them maintain. I have found myself interested in bettas and killis at times, but never found a way in. The shops have no killis, and bettas never seem to be in a good environment and have not seen any good quality females. Started in the hobby as a kid with a community tank, found cichlids, loved my shell dwellers and mouth brooders. Discovered ANGFA, and love natives though work killed my ability to go to meetings (ex-telco often with 24/7 committments). Only have a few tanks now (3), but used to have a lot more before kids.
  18. Hello everyone.. This is my boy that I've had for about two years. I've never had any issues with him and I keep up with his tank's water quality. Unfortunately with covid and my line of work I was working for about 2 weeks straight. I did my weekly water change when I was able to but but I was not able to thoroughly check up on him as often as I like to. He is in a 15g with about 5 otocinclus catfish. I don't remember the exact parameters when I did the water change but I believe there was a slight increase in the ammonia (possibly from my husband adding 2 of the otos earlier that week). I realized he was insanely lethargic when I fed him one day and upon further inspection I saw his fins were in bad shape. Before anything I interrogated my husband because he was in charge of the feeding that particular week lol but I immediately took a better look at the otos and they seemed fine so I moves the betta to my hospital tank and I'm at the tail end of a Furan treatment. Now, he never lost his appetite but he would lay at the bottom and I'd see his eyes fix on me when I went to check on him (broke my heart) and he wouldn't move. Luckily he seems a lot more active throughout the day and doesn't just lay at the bottom anymore. My concern is that although I have dealt with fin rot once in the past, this seems different.. the fins seem almost pinched. And I don't mean clamped.. I mean literally pinched at the tips. They're perky compared to his first day in the h.t but I'm concerned its something else. I'd also like advice on whether I should take any other steps with the 15g and otos before he is reintroduced after healing. I'll include some photos.. the one with flash was when I first moved him over, the darker one is of his fins now.. Any information and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
