  1. Wow he's so gorgeous! I am also on my first betta (12 liters). I hope you find them as lovely to take care of as I do. Welcome
  2. Thanks! It's been a day since the fake plants were put in and he has been working on a bubble nest on one of the surface leaves. I was so surprised.
  3. Thanks You're right, I don't have air con.. I've lived in Cairns all my life so anything below 25*c in my room temperature feels like frostbite to me I never thought about our tropical differences. funny actually, on the way home I bought a heater mat for my bowl because I was worried it was too cold for him, and before I opened the box, I put in the tank thermometer, googled the recommended temps, and found that my water was wayyy too warm already. haha.. I did notice the internal thermometer going up to 32 after I moved the bubbles further away from it. I didn't know my air stone could cool a tank so thanks so much for pointing that out. I'll take the sandwich bag idea because I have tons of those I can use and discard. I might test it out with a half-frozen bag first to see how sensitive the temps changes are. Does it hurt the fish at all if they decide to swim near the frozen bag? Originally I came up with the idea that I could freeze tank water into ice cubes but I thought maybe it would kill my fish
  4. I'm not a professional breeder or showcaser or anything. I love my betta veiltail. I know he's nothing like a show-quality half-moon or crowntail but he has so much personality and he's so lovely. Just wanted to share a couple of pictures. The bowl tank. It's a 13L bowl but there's 12.5L of water currently. It used to have live Yellow Ivy plants. They grew roots up to the top and the whole tank just became this massive flower pot of floating leaves and dirt. I got rid of the plant and just put in a couple of small fake silks. The glass bowl magnifies everything inside it, I really like this effect. There's a filter behind plant #2 and an air stone behind the first cave-rock. I had to tie a knot in the air tube to weaken it, so I'm not even sure if it still aerates the water with the little bubbles it does do. He was really happy after I put in the plants because they stopped the filter from moving the water around so much. He also sleeps on them on the surface. Here's my fish Jasper. ! His fins are regrowing slowly after he had ammonia burns at the pet store. I love him sooo much. He's my first betta ever. Without lights, his body looks a bit black and with blood-red fins. With lights, he reflects a blue shine between his scales so the two colours mix to make a purple aura colour. When he swims around, the blue also extends to his fins. I didn't get to see this blue colour until a week after I got him from the pet store, that was also when I made his water softer. He's got a personality and I never expected that from a fish. He's really friendly. Sometimes I think he's way smarter than me and likes to belittle me. He's also got an apple snail tank mate.
  5. My betta seems okay with his tank usually being at a constant 29*c -> 31*c. From what I've read this is a bit warmer than the recommended temp range; but the water is naturally like this just sitting in the bowl with no heater. The weather is pretty mild up in Cairns, the temps are usually the same all year around except for when the solstice comes. There's a heat spike and then a cold spike so I'm thinking that maybe when true summer comes along, my tank will get higher than probably 35*c. I know I shouldn't worry about it too much yet but I was wondering how should I keep my tank cool in the future? Even if it is just for two weeks.
  6. thank you! i'm happy i found the right kind of fish to keep in this tank size and i was really surprised that my betta was so smart too. they are the best
  7. Good evening everyone My name is Chantelle, I just turned 21 and I'm from Cairns QLD. I have only just recently gotten into the hobby of fish keeping. When I was little, my parents had a huge aquarium full of goldfish, fantails, snails, some other interesting breeds and what not. After they had to sell the tank when I was 13, I didn't think much of it until I suddenly really want to keep fish again. They sold it because it was a very very large tank, and with everyone growing up they found hardly any time to keep maintaining it with their busy schedules. I really needed a friend I could raise and be with (I love pets). But I decided that with my university life, I couldn't have the time to keep a dog or a cat or a bird, since these animals need almost 24-hour-attention to keep them happy and they hate being left alone during the day. At first I decided on getting a fantail fish, but after reading on what fantails like, I found that they hate small spaces and love to go swimming in big tanks. I can't maintain a big tank, and I have a small 13L fish bowl that a lady at the pet store suggested to me for goldfish. Terrible, I know! I don't think I trust what many pet stores say anymore, because I learned that pretty much all fish hate something so small!! I still really wanted something in this tiny tank and I had to think that there must be something I can keep in this bowl. I thought maybe just raise snails by themselves. But then someone suggested a Betta fish and I loved the idea. I think 13L is still a small bowl, and I know that at some point, Betta must love big spaces too. But this is all I have for now and I think the betta fish I rescued from the pet store jar is happy with his new home. I'm sorry if I don't sound experienced, because I'm not, but I really love this hobby, and I hope that when I'm finished with school I can maintain a bigger tank than this little bowl! This little betta is just my start . The bowl itself had been cycling for probably 2 months, because it took me a really long time to decide on what I actually wanted in there. The pet store that we have in my area is pretty bad with it's betta fish. Almost all of them looked sickly and sad! There were only two in particular that looked extremely healthy (tails flaring up in a nicer way, good colour, good shape, good swimming in the little space they had). There was a small red betta that caught my eye and it was very curious towards me. I decided to get this betta, even though that even as a beginner I could definitely tell there was something sickly about this fish. I wanted to get him out of that small dirty jar and see if he would get better if I treat him. That's also why I decided to join this forum because I've been reading a lot about betta fin rot and other illnesses that I wanted opinions on! I bought this fish 5 days ago and since then I have had to change the water 100% twice, with aquarium salt and conditioner for the water. I haven't yet decided on a fin rot medicine product to use, since some people have been telling me that it is not fin rot, but that's for another thread. The temperature of the water has been naturally warm from the climate of my house so there is no heater yet (I might use one in winter when it drops to 18*c) Anyway I'll save all that for another time. Sorry for the super long intro, I just really love my fish. In case you didn't recognize from my name, his name is Jasper. I really want him to live long and healthy and I want to help him with his fins. Nice to meet everyone, if someone as inexperienced as myself is welcome here, that is.
