  1. A couple of days before a guppy gives birth u can notice that her body will Square off. By this I mean if u look at her from behind she will look like a box. In saying that its really hard to c this until u have seen a few then watched for when she drops. Other than that razzi has u covered he knows his stuff.
  2. I'm in country Vic and I've been looking at and buying guppies for the last few months. In January one of my lfs have 5m guppies for $10 and they were pretty good quality, after they came off special they got in some really nice ones. The last couple of weeks I've noticed all guppies at every lfs seem shocking quality , not sure y but just can't find any decent stock. I'm hoping its just a bad batch n the quality gets better. Time will tell
  3. I've been feeding them a bit of fish flakes but just found out they like veggies so started feeding them a bit of carrot and a few peas. I think I was over feeding at first as well so I might take ur advice and cut it back to every other day. Thanks again.
  4. Thanx azz. Yes it's a shrimp only tank(2ft 50L) with a sponge filter and a heap of java moss. I originally bought them to clean the moss in my community tank but after reading up on them and seeing how small they were I decided to start them a tank of their own. But every time I move some java moss into my fry tank a couple always hitch a ride. One even ended up in community tank (still not sure how) but he didn't last long once a female fighter spotted it.
  5. Gidday. I got some red cherry shrimp a few weeks ago and I just noticed a couple of them have eggs. I'm wondering how long until the eggs hatch?
  6. Where can I find the other thread ?
  7. Thanks I'm really just wanting to breed the fish I have ATM to get some experience. Hopefully in the near future I can get some fancy guppies to breed with the biggest problem is there r so many different types, I will have to do some research n find out more. Thanks.
  8. Gidday guppy peeps I found a little guppy today in my lfs he is really cool with bright colours and from what I've been told he is a veil tail not sure this is true but I want to use him to breed with. My question is will his offspring have his tail or at least a % even if it only 25% ill be happy. Cheers Shane Ellis
  9. Hi I just got a second hand 50l tank and it has a small internal filter tha I want use until I can get a hang on. My question is about the material insid the filter, I have taken out the carbon an put in wool along with the bio sponge which I cut to fit it in where the carbon was. Will this b ok? I intend on putting in a sponge filter out of another tank and cycling the tank for a couple of days. I haven't had much experience cycling a tank so I'm just checking no one can c any problems I might have before I put fish into the tank. Thanx in advance
  10. Haha n I don't really want to break her spirit even if I could. I actually bought a 2 litre juice pourer today with the thought its a tempoary solution to keep everyone safe for now n easy to do a daily 50% water change for now but I think I will drill some holes in the morning(for the neighbours sake) and put her in the filtered tank n c if she will settle ( really doubt it but gotta try) Think I have found part of the problem. I of the female guppies has given birth n I'm not quite ready for fry I have a bit of java moss n a few river rocks which the fry r hiding in but the bettas were hunting for them. Would this cause the extra aggression? I went and got a small 15l tank n put the bettas n adult guppy in ther so hopefully the fry will b fine without the adults in there. Still got the red female in solitary so everything is peaceful for now.
  11. Doesn't seem to worry. Good idea chi. The only thing is my shy male crown tail is harder to find than the bristle nose(he seems to like his privacy) but she obviously hunts for him. I think she is just bad to the bone. Like the idea of putting in the tank but separated until she settles down. Only other solution I thought of was introduce more females but tank is to small for that.
  12. Was afraid u guys might say something like that. I think I will just treat her as if she was a male I like her too much to get rid of her. Might try her in a tank with no other fighters she does seem to worry about the guppies to mich unless there is another betta in the general area
  13. I have a small community tank with 9 guppies 1 male betta 1 baby bristle nose and 1 sometimes 2 female bettas which is where I have a problem. I have a young female betta and a nice red female but she destroys reverting in her path. The two female came from the same tank in lfs I noticed that the young female(not sure what her technical name is she has a white body and red fins) was being picked on in the lfs tank which I have found before with her type so expected the red female to pick on her. I conditioned the red female and put her with a beautiful red vt male. After spawning I returner her to the community tank wher over two days she has not only nipped a couple of the guppies tails and put a couple of bites in the young female but she has absolutely destroyed my shy male crown tail to the point where u would think he was a female. Any suggestions on how to take this wild lady so she will live peacefully in a community tank. I have already considered re honing her but I really like her just can't have her the way she is.
  14. Hi Graham and mags my name is Shane and I live in morwell. I have just started keeping fish again after about 5 years, I currently have 9 guppies 4 bettas and I've just purchased 2 oscars which are my first fish bigger than a betta. I read ur introduction as was blown away by the amount and variety of fish u have. I'm sending u a message because I seen u hav a couple of oscars and any advice I can get on Taking care of oscars will be a real advantage for me. I added u as a friend in here and it seems it just added u if that is not ok I apologise. I also noticed u breed guppies and I'm very interested in doing the same I hav bred bettas successfully in the past and was wondering if uncoils steer me in the right direction to get some good breeding stock as ATM I have purchased my guppies from lfs and would like to get some better quality fish to breed with. Cheers Shane
