  8. just awesome guys. If you are an IBC member and keen to join the club please email me and I will contact the IBC. We will need a meeting to elect office bearers etc at some stage. I'm happy to take the role of show chair or such. Cheers, someone
  9. I've just received an email from Jack Tobin of the iBC. He is asking for a list of members for Betta Australis. This club is still on their books, and still has a bank account with a substantial amount of money in it. Depending on what people would like to do - this club could be resurrected or "reborn". I think the paperwork is still around somewhere, plus there are banners and signs. Betta Australis has 4 members at present (myself and the treasurer are signatories on the bank account). A club needs 5 IBC members to stay accredited. One membership is a family so 2 more separate members are required. It may be an easy way to start up a club again. During my recent visit to Asia I was HOUNDED about Australia's lack of clubs and shows. I am willing to help with both, but will not commit to anything without a large amount of trustworthy support. Have been left "standing at the altar" far too many times to go down that route again. The Australian Betta Scene was set back almost a decade by the actions of certain individuals several years ago. It's probably time to try again. The Betta clubs in Asia are keen to support any shows held. It would be nice to have the sort of camaraderie, friendship and support in a Brisbane club that the Asian clubs display. There is possibly space to hold meetings and table shows in the arcade, I am happy to talk to Ace Comics about hiring space from them. So as far as a club goes I am willing to offer complete, wholehearted support, but I will not lead. Best regards, someone
  10. Hey Graeme, who won the club challenge? Cheers, someone

  13. thanks for the laugh Lisa, that is priceless!! I don't want a love in or another slanderfest. Just wanted to state the facts and leave it at that. Cheers, someone
  14. Am hoping the girls will let this stay up for a while. Have been down this path in the past. It is not pretty. As before all accusations will prove to be false. I just hope people will see the light a little faster this time. Here goes... Ok, so several people have brought a thread to my attention. Seems that with no consultation, warning, fact finding or comment, LFS has been removed from a forum and subject to numerous false allegations and defamatory slurs. As it is not longer possible to question or defend such defamatory posts on that forum (convenient huh?) - here are the facts: This has something to do with a paypal account - we have no clue whatsoever to what it pertains to. None of my staff breed fish. As such, we have not purchased fish from staff members. Local bred fish are advertised as such in lists. On tanks it generally only says point of origin if this is outside of Australia. Interesting how this is now the reason, rather than the original, llibelous accusation of embezzlement. All fish are brought into quarantine via an AQIS inspection at the Qantas holding bay. Every bag is inspected. We do purchase non-schedule 6 fish from other private breeders and wholesalers in other states. We don't import through Perth, nor purchase fish from anyone in that state. "Keen to stamp this sector of the hobby out" - hypocrisy anyone? So essentially anyone with a grudge or axe to grind can spew forth false and defamatory accusations. Nice. If you have any genuine questions or concerns, please email me. If not, business as usual folks. Best regards, someone

  18. Heck no - spread the word. I have also drafted up a flier and tear off strips with the petition web address. Hopefully, people will rally to the cause and put these up in shopping centres, community notice boards, Uni information sites etc. Approach your LFS/LPS if you can. If you can do better - please post up - I have little time and the docs are not that flash. http://www.users.on.net/~someone/savetheindustry.doc http://www.users.on.net/~someone/tearoffwebaddress.xls cheers, J PS am working on another letter to send to the minister. Again, it is a time thing, but will upload and link when ready. Cheers, J
  19. cost of females start at $15 for standard grade form and colour. Cheers, J

  20. At present the legislation has not been passed, but it is on the desk of the Director of Quarantine for assessment. There is still a very vigorous and valiant fight being waged, but it will not succeed without the help of the community. The number of signatures so far is pathetic. Please continue to encourage EVERYONE you know to sign this petition. The Iridovirus testing is just the first step on the way to banning the import of ALL fish. Over the past 50 years aquarium hobbyists have lost access to more and more species of fish. The current allowable import list makes no sense. It was an ad hoc list that got thrown together to cut down the number of species AQIS officers had to identify. (surely a simpler and easier way to go would have been to put together a "not allowed" list of far fewer species!) If the batch testing legislation goes through the next on the hit list will be marines. You can then expect there to be a crack down on back-yard breeders and aquaculture license holders. Already NT hobbyists can only keep fish on the allowable list. They cannot sell anything without a license. This legislation is already in place in QLD, but after the "guppy gestapo" debacle, not CURRENTLY enforced. Do not sit smugly by thinking how much money you will make as a breeder because no-one will be importing the targeted fish. When the smaller importers fall they will take many shops with them. Already the main importers are restricting sales. The big chain stores are contracted to the main importers. They cannot buy your fish. Will an importer buy your "untested" stock? The ultimate aim of DAFF and Biosecurity is to have NO INTRODUCED species AT ALL. Fair trade would not permit the banning of species. Taking the path of "disease threat" is a bit like America's Homeland Security and terrorism - once so branded, you can do whatever you like. So please, stand up for your hobby! Please print out fliers. Print out "tear off" pages of the web link to stick up on notice board. Post these at supermarkets, community notice boards, schools and universities. Anywhere with a cork board! You MUST act if aquarium keeping is to stay a viable hobby for 1000s of people. Thank you, someone
  21. I have both Thai and Indonesian friends chasing up their government departments. To me this IS an international issue. If it is passed here it sets a dangerous precedent - government bodies making monumental decisions with no consultation or feedback from those most affected. Countries that supply Australia need to voice their concerns as well. My 2c, J
  22. hey, it's the big T!! Welcome :bighug:
  23. An online petition has been created at this link http://www.gopetition.com/petition/39081.html please sign the petition and comment - especially reference how you will be affected by the procedure. If you have religious views (eg Buddhism) comment on the ethics of the large scale, unnecessary and wanton destruction of a living creature. Comment how unfavourable this appears to the international community etc. Be polite & truthful but emotive. (Particularly if you are a store or legit online seller - mention the COST $$ to your business, loss of employees etc) Perhaps type your comment in a word document first to check spelling - nothing says "uneducated ranting fool" like a paragraph of abysmal spelling and grammar! Power to the People fellow Aquarists. Best regards, someone
