  1. I'd say they'll get on fine but any male betta would shred the fins of any male guppy he saw, well the long finned ones anyway. EDIT: In my experience!
  2. Welcome. You seem to have a completely different idea of scale. By chance are you single? I don't think my partner would ever let me have 200 tanks. Let alone 50.
  3. I realise this is a relitively old thread but I thought I'd pipe in. Java moss is hardy as anything (I've had it live for over six months burried in dry gravel in a dark cupboard and it came out bright green). What happened, as you can see in the photos, is this java moss has had all sorts of debris build up on it. This is about the only thing I know which will kill it. You either need a current to stop it settling or shrimp (possibly snails and the odd variety of fish might do this too but my snails are pretty bad for just letting it go). Blackworm out.
  4. I've had several guppies die that way (in fact it's the main mode of death amongst my guppies) but to be honest all mine tend to have lost all their colour by the time they're floundering like that (and yours doesn't look like it has) which is why SBD came to mind. Sorry you lost the little fella.
  5. Sarah, any updates on this front? Blackworm.
  6. That certainly resembles a swim bladder infection. Rather than say much about it I think I'll just link you to a good page on it. http://www.petfish.net/articles/Bettas/swimbladder_betta.php
  7. Louu, Barbs are lovely fish so here's what I know of them. Every single book I've read on the subject describes them as a peaceful fish but whenever you ask a lot of guppy keepers about them they'll just stop short of calling them blood thirsty monsters. Truth is they like to bite long flowey fins (which funnily enough other fish sort of need). Keeping them in a species tank should call for one gorgeous shoal though (with no pesky guppies or bettas as bad influences). Have fun cycling that tank, BWorm.
  8. Pet city (Mt. Gravatt) currently are selling local bred guppies, so I assume they buy them. On the other hand they've got 4 tanks full at the moment. Ofcourse, now that I doublecheck your post, I see that you are on the northside thus making that entirely pointless. :)
  9. Hi Rachel, Where abouts are you from? I know discus aren't too hard to find up here in brissy, so I'm guessing you're elsewhere? I'm wishing I had a six footer .
  10. Yan, I assure you, that's exactly what I have planned for the cichlid. Wow, you're right, that is VERY photoshopped. Still a nice fish. Fishbites, it's true they're not very seethough, but they're wonderfully cheap (just like me). I will more than likely be on the lookout for cracked tanks, etc and as I'm not in too much of a hurry for space (the endlers thankfully seem to be uninterested in cannibalism atm) they may turn out to be enough. Which is not to say I don't currently have a 50L tub cycling in the shed as we speak.
  11. Hi Yan, They're pretty normal yellow/orange sailfin mollies. That's an interesting colour pattern on the fish in your avi.
  12. The LFS I frequent has already turned me down on the peacock. Giving away 6' tanks? Scary. I'm a tight arse (not to mention a poor uni student) so I'll probably be raising fry in those clear plastic tubs you buy for storage for a while. Um, I'm thinking more endlers (I want a big tank of males at some point but takes a while to get there) and ofcourse some fancy fighters because they're about the most stunning thing out there.
  13. Hi I'm Will. So essentially I'm 22 and living with my parents still, which somewhat limits my fish breeding ability (though there's whispers of stealing the back shed for a fish room). Anyway, I've bred some pet shop fighters with a bit of success and am looking for better fish to use as a base. I'm also here because I love fish in general. I've got 4 tanks in my room (though sadly the biggest is only a foot long). It contains a selection of guppies and mollies (because I've had them forever and they won't go away). And I'm also breeding a swarm of endlers which the shop assures me aren't hybrids. Not that I really care, I just think they'd look nice as a swarm in a large tank... (though I must admit they're spawning quite true to the pictures from germany). I also have blue yabbie whom is a few years old and lives quite peacefully with her firetail gudgeon companions. Unless I forget to feed her. Oh and there's that horrible brown (I'm thinking female) peacock cichlid I'm subconciously hoping keels over one of these days to free up it's tank. If anyone on the southside wants it they're welcome to it.
