  3. My tank has 1 female, 3 males, and every 3-4 weeks they'll spend a few days where they just chase her frequently, and squeeze into anywhere she's trying to rest. I've read online that this should only happen once a year, but if you slowly raise the temperature in the tank over a few days you can artificially trigger this behaviour. I'm not controlling the temperature other than what nature is doing here on the Gold Coast, is there something I can do to stop it occuring so frequently? One of my males hurt his eye, I'm guessing from trying to squeeze into her hiding spaces. Thank you
  4. About 9 months ago my wife brought home 2 unwanted goldfish (telescope and I think a ryukin) from her work. So I've been learning to care for them since. I got a 220L tank for them and my wife and daughter picked out a comet and a possibly an oranda, plus a brisslenose pelco for the tank. I reused the old small tank to try out some yellow shrimp, and guppies. Plus we got plenty of ramshorn, bladder and trumpet snails, pus 1 mystery snail.

  6. Welcome. This is not the busiest forum these days but we’ll do our best to help.
  7. So I am no expert in thethe hobby. I had a 50l tank with a few Neon Tetras. I got a 290 L tank now, I have a few Dwarf Gourami Neon Tetras, Rasboras and Danios. Looking for a place to get some advice were I can.

    Aqua stores

Hi there. I'm having some serious troubles finding a store where I could buy shrimp, snails and plants from. All that I find are stores and online stores with bad reviews. Can anyone recommend a place or online store where I could buy from that wouldn't make me regret? I'm located in Brisbane. Thanks in advance
  9. Hi everyone, my name is Colin and I need advice on setting up a fresh water Australian native aquarium. My tank holds 126 litres but I want to have plants growing above the waterline so I won't be filling it all the way up.. I would like the help and advice on what I need to achieve a natural riverbed style aquarium, which includes substrate, pump, light, fish, plants and how much I will need of these things I will need. Thank you for any advice you can offer. Cheers Colin
  10. Yes, I think it eventually settled down.
  11. Thanks for that, when it did happen to you did it clear itself up after a few water changes? :)
  12. The snakeskin pattern is dominant but I’d be concerned about screwing around with the black metal. Have you not been able to find any of the same variety that are larger?
  13. What sort of filtration are you thinking about doing?
  14. Whenever that’s happened to me I try to clean as much of it off and increase the water changes. That it’s “normal and should clear up”… yeah not sure about this. I’ve not been told that before and I certainly haven’t tested that concept. I’ve often wondered why two tanks setup up side by side in exactly the same way are affected differently. I guess there are probably more variables than meets the eye. I agree it’s probably to do with tank stabilisation but I’m not sure about the clearing up part. I think at the very least, clean it off the glass and increase the water changes. You might also consider adding a product like Seachem Stability to see if that helps.
  15. Hi all, I know there is an infinite qty of information, opinions etc on the internet but I like to get advice first hand So, my two larger fish proved they dont like company so we started a second tank for friendly fish .... it has been running for one month and it has started turning brown on all surfaces (the rocks, plants and inside the glass). Google says its "normal" and should clear up when the tank stabilises but what do you guys think? What should I do?
  16. Hey guys, just saying hello as this is my first post. Unfortunately I have some fishy issues so I have come here looking for help. I will start a thread on it as soon as it is unlocked for me. I have two small tanks: 1x 2ft with a territorial rainbow shark and 1x pleco 1x 3ft tank with - guppies, corys and some rose barbs I did have breeding platys but they are no longer with us ...
  17. Hi! I am a hobbyist and currently have my second lot of guppy fry from a tuxedo male and neon green female. Not long finned as the male gets aggro at every other male I have had in the tank! The first fry came from the tuxedo male and the partial tuxedo female, who is the biggest! She's also the funniest! When I first put her in the tank she bumped into the wall and tail slapped the jumbo mystery snail! I have a red betta male and he made bubbles quite soon after I got him, but he needs a female. I think he is a double tail, I've sent a video to an expert breeder in Sydney to see if they can tell me. I hope to get a blue toned female for some potential purple fry, although I don't expect anything! I know it takes a while. Also have plenty of red snails and black snails. I think it started with 3 tiny snails included with 2 Cory cats. I also have 18 barbs and 6 neon tetras. As well as 2 mystery snails who have been mating a lot and I had to put them in a snail exclusive tank as the female laid 3 lots of eggs so far in what is now the guppy only tank. I also have an outdoor pond with Pacific blue eyes and endemic water plants. I am in Ipswich area in QLD.
  18. Does anyone know the genetics of this strain? I acquired some fry on 11/7 at about 5 weeks of age. I want to make them larger. Am wondering what strain should I cross them with.
  19. Hello. I am a retired science teacher from California. I enjoy fishing, gardening, and IPA's. I have had fish since I was 4 years old. I decided to get back into fish by breeding guppies. My plan is to raise 4 strains through line breeding. Will see how things go.
  20. ok im going to start by saying im pretty new to keeping fish except i had a few barra in a decent sized tank probably 25 years ago, when i lived in Fremantle, now im in the wheat belt and its either 40+ degrees in summer and freezing in winter. im going to put on my best plumber and electrician hat on even tho i'm fairly ordinary at both, ive got a few ibc's lying around and a decent sized poly aquaculture tank that ive been using for some cows i have on another block 30 mins from my place, so i'll be bring that back once ive got them sorted with and extra water tank. so the plan is to start setting this up over the next week or two fotos will come soon as i get more done, so far i just started plumbing the first ibc and atm trying to make a bell syphon, and get my first batch of fish in there in a week or so fingers crossed, need help with understanding where im going wrong once i upload some pics.
  21. gday guys, just joined to start learning about aquaculture, have done hydroponics for a while, just nothing to do with fish, except catching them on a line.
  22. Hi everyone, a long time ago I was an active member of Ausaqua and Breeder of Bettas (early 2000’s until about 2010). I then took a break from it all and vowed I was done with Betta breeding and all the work that it entailed. Recently, as a semi retired person with more time on their hands I’ve returned to the world of Bettas….specifically Giant and not so giant HM PK’s. In the past I established two HM lines known as Palomino and Metallic Teal and these were eagerly taken up by members of Ausaqua at the time. I currently breed birds…..have done so continuously for decades, but the fish just kept calling to me. I looked up Ausaqua Forums to see if it still existed and was pleasantly surprised to find that it does…….and that I can “still” log on as a member! I thought I would reintroduce myself as I now have a bunch of new style Bettas I’m really excited about and today, managed to successfully spawn a pair of Thai import giant HM “Candy Koi”. I’m still friends with Lisa “MetalBetta” (one of the founders of Ausaqua Forums) and am hoping to entice her back into the fold…….🤞🙏. Anyway, I’m hoping that the lively Betta community I remember from before is still there😊
  23. Looking forward to seeing the posts.
  24. It may just happen, after all I'm back now. I'm in the process of starting my first walstad method tank. 😁
  25. Yes it was. I’m really just hanging on in case people start coming back.
  26. What a shame, it was such a good group.
  27. Hey there Yanagi. Yes we’re still here. Kinda. It’s very quiet.
  28. Hey all! I wanted to see if the forum was still alive! To reintroduce myself, I used to keep Bettas and a variety of other things. I worked at Auburn Aquarium for a long time before I moved to fish wholesale at Petras and moved again to managing the aquarium section at City Farmers in north Parramatta. They quickly got bought out by Petbarn and I left to have my first kid anyway. Three kids later I'm finally returning to the hobby. 😁 I've added a photo of my one and only Betta, a freebie from the LFS as he had a tumor protruding from his side. It's since dropped off and is now healing over.
